Belts are so versatile and can serve a couple of purposes when you add one into your outfit. First, any belt worn at your natural waist will accentuate your curves and make your waist look nipped in. Belts of any width are great for this purpose so choosing one will depend on the look you’re going for; slim belts are fairly subtle whereas thicker belts create more of a statement, but that can differ depending on the shape and style as well.
Another reason to wear a belt is as an eye-catching accessory. Wear a gold metal belt for a night out or a floral printed belt for a day at work. If you’re headed to a posh event, try pairing a posh LBD like our Duchess Embossed Dress with a thin red belt. The slim width complements the femininity of the dress and the colour adds a touch of vibrancy that is fun and flirty.
Throwing on a jacket over your dress is great for cooler weather and creates a chic layered look. It can also change the look of your dress; if you’ve got a casual black dress, try wearing a coloured jacket like our Katie Blazer to dress it up for work or with a printed jacket for an afternoon out with friends.
A jacket can only do so much to change your dress’ look, though. If your dress is a style that’s geared more toward evening, like the Ravish Dress, a jacket won’t make it work-appropriate. Keep it for nighttime and pair it with a piece like the Fanciful Cardi-Jacket. It’s great for covering up on the way to the party in cool weather and black-on-black clothing looks so sleek.
A simple dress can be glammed up so easily with a statement necklace! There are so many options when it comes to bold necklaces: rhinestones, metal plates, plastic chains, strands of pearls… the list goes on!
Pieces with lots of rhinestones are especially great for evening and chunky beads add so much playfulness to afternoon outfits. The rules are really flexible here though—there are few styles that are strictly day or evening. Hold up pieces to your outfit and see what looks good. And don’t be afraid to mismatch! A necklace can be taken off just as easily as it went on.
Statement necklaces certainly aren’t great for every dress though. Some necklines, like halters and cowls, just don’t work very well with necklaces in general. Also avoid necklaces if your dress has an embellished neckline, like on the Sashay Ruched Dress.
Bold Shoes or Handbag
These pieces are great statement-making accessories that can make a big impact in your outfit. Whether it’s the colour, print, or shape, a fabulous pair of shoes or handbag truly stands out next to the simplicity of a LBD. Try a pair of glittery pumps, a yellow clutch, or a striped tote. If you decide to go with a bold pair of shoes and an eye-catching handbag, keep your other accessories minimal. Some black dresses have detailing to consider as well, so if your dress is embellished be sure your big accessories work with it. For example, Lilika’s Foxy Little Black Dress’ gold chain neckline would be complemented beautifully by gold hardware on a bag or shoes!
Silk is a highly breathable material that making this accessory suitable for all temperatures, so don’t worry about being too warm! A vibrantly coloured scarf in a lovely solid or an exciting print is a comfortable way to accessorize your outfit and there are so many ways to wear it! Use a short scarf and tie it with a knot close to your neck for a retro look or choose a circle scarf for a laid-back vibe. Experiment with different lengths and prints to find out what you like best and adopt this classic piece for day and night looks alike!
Bracelets, earrings, and rings work for practically any outfit. These can be used alongside some of the other suggestions or instead of them. Above we mentioned that not all necklines work with necklaces or scarves. For these styles, like the plunging cowl neckline on the Ravish Dress, try a sparkly cuff and some chandelier earrings to add extra glam to your look.
