Rich, pure hues are often shied away from because of just how vibrant they are but they can be worn fabulously without looking too wild. When going for these kinds of colours, try wearing neutral-coloured clothing, particularly black and/or white. Wearing bright colours in makeup and clothing can become too colourful very quickly and get into clown-ish territory for many people, but when vibrant hues are worn on the eyes and neutral shades worn on the body, the clothing tones down the excitement of the makeup.
With this concept in mind, even electric blue eyeshadow can be incorporated tastefully. Start with picking out a black and white outfit like the Divine Peplum Top and the Popsicle Corset Skirt. This combination is perfect for balancing the colour of the eyeshadow. For your makeup, apply the bright blue across the whole lid and into the crease but not far beyond it; a hue so bold should be applied modestly. At this point, if it still seems very vivid, a deeper shade of blue can be applied in the outer corners of the eyes and along the lash line and blended into the electric blue. A clean line of black gel or liquid liner across the upper lash line gives a sense of elegance to the look. Simple black mascara pulls the look together and finishes it off.
Alternatively, brights can be incorporated into eye makeup in the form of coloured eyeliner. Try teal or violet and do a thicker line with a playful wing for a look that is bold in both shape and shade! Skin-tone powder applied across the eyelid will even the colour of your skin and help the liner stand out even more.
From deep jewel tones and dark browns to straight out black, these shades are fantastic for creating sultry, smoky looks. For daytime, wear these with outfits that combine very dark shades with some colour. The Adore Pink N Powder Blue Top with a pair of black shorts is a great outfit that could handle dark eye makeup. Try wearing it with a shimmery navy blue eyeshadow on the upper lid and blend it up a bit past the crease and add a bit on the lower lash line on the outer sides. Apply a bit of black liner to the upper lash line as well to tidy the look and finish with a good mascara. This look s dark but the shimmery nature of the eyeshadow and not having it all the way along the bottom lightens it for daytime.
For nighttime looks, start with an all-black outfit like Sashay Ruched Dress in Black and the Fanciful Cardi-Jacket and pair it with a black smoky eye. Start with some pencil or gel liner and smooth it out across your lids to get a nice, dark base. Apply the black shadow to the whole lid and blend it up a bit past the crease so that there is no harsh line where the black ends. Add pencil liner along the lower lash line and smudge to create a smoky look; you can add some eyeshadow here as well but it’s not necessary. A clean line of liquid or gel liner along the top lash line and some mascara completes this dark look that is wonderfully sultry for an evening date or a night out with the girls.
Brightly coloured lipstick is easy to incorporate into your look as it works with a wide variety of clothing colours. It can be paired with colourful, dark, or neutral outfits, and some shades even work with pastel clothes too. Some colours do certainly clash, though; red lips with a green outfit can look pretty tacky! If you’re unsure, just try the lipstick on. It can be wiped off if it doesn’t look right!
For the most part, choosing the right bright lip colour for your outfit will depend on the tones of the colours in your clothes. For example, the Smitten Peplum Top features a softer pink that would look great with a coral pink whereas the Adore Floral Top, with its rich reds and yellows, would do better with a true red. These colours can be very playful and lipsticks with a glossy finish can make them even more lively!
Deep shades of red, violet, and brown work particularly well with clothing in neutrals or dark colours. The colours chosen for you clothing can completely change the vibe that the dark lipstick creates; for example, deep red lips with an all-black outfit with sheer portions looks very mysterious and vampy whereas the same shade worn with boutique designer dresses, like the Duchess Sweetheart Dress, that combines a light nude colour and black, gives a very sophisticated, posh feeling.
Be very careful when applying lip products in dark shades as any imperfections are highly visible. Be sure to use a lip liner to start with, creating the outline and then filling it in. Apply the lipstick over top and use a small brush with concealer to clean up the outline when you’re all done. This method will create a flawless pout! Though this dark-lipped look is big in women’s fashion, NZ is still experiencing warmer weather as summer comes to a close and that can make lipstick feel a bit heavy or sticky. On warmer days, try a stain instead to get the same amount of colour with a much lighter feel.
